Affliction Necromancer Leveling Guide for Diablo IV Season 12 - Slaughter

by MacroBioBoi/Season 12 - Slaughter/Last Updated: 2026年4月26日Maxroll 导入

The Affliction Necromancer is the strongest leveling build, by a far margin. With the best part being that this strategy can work on any setup you want! You can play Sever Affliction, Blight Affliction and even Minion Affliction. But the best results come from focusing purely on Affliction damage itself, while using the most efficient tool to apply it: Iron Maiden.

The Codex of Power contains five of the eight best Legendary Aspects for this build, making it accessible for casual players. This allows for super fast on-boarding to the build and an easy path of scaling into the early end game. Damned massively increasing your damage. Grasping Veins helps scaling Critical Strike damage and Chance to Critically Strike. While Torturous makes it so Iron Maiden triggers your Passive Skills for more damage!

This setup uses Sever as a good Core Skill to start with, since the build doesn't work until you unlock your Key Passive... and you have to level somehow. The benefit is that Sever scales in the same way as Affliction, so the gear you acquire early on translates well when you transition. You use Skeletal Minions in the early game to help with Resource management and Cooldown Reduction, but eventually sacrifice them for even more power!

If you're lucky enough to unlock the aspect Cursed Aura early on, you become a walking simulator of destruction. This one Aspect activates your engine by itself and monster just begin popping around you like loot piñatas.

This guide teaches you all about how to reach the endgame in Diablo 4 with the Affliction Necromancer. Let's begin!

Key Aspect(s)

  • Cursed Aura takes this build from a good leveling option, to the BEST leveling option. Gambling for Boots is the easiest way to obtain it.

Season 1 - Genesis
Sever Necromancer

The Season 12 theme brings Killstreaks and Bloodied Items to Diablo 4. Slay enemies in succession to begin a streak that grants increasingly greater benefits based on which affixes you roll on your gear in addition to seasonal reputation and experience. Tiers are divided as follows: Killstreak (0-99) - Carnage (100-249) - Devastation (250-499) - Bloodbath (500-999) - Massacre (1000-9000) - Fresh Meat! (9001+). For most instanced content types, you can typically expect to reach up to the 4th tier (Bloodbath). Additionally, you can find Bloodied Sigils for Nightmare Dungeons, Infernal Hordes and Lair Bosses that offer greater challenges and rewards (introducing "pseudo Torment 5").

Bloodied Items

Bloodied affixes are bonus affixes that can randomly roll on gear and come in three categories: Rampage (armor), Feast (weapons), Hunger (jewelry). The first two offer minor combat effects while the latter boosts specific loot drops, which doesn't impact your build. Recommended affixes for this build are:

  • Rampage: Critical Strike Chance, Attack Speed, Core Stat%
  • Feast: Reset Cooldowns, Gain Berserking
  • Hunger: Rune Drop Rate, Rampage Drop Rate, Gold Drop Rate

There is more to discover including the new seasonal Slaughterhouses and how to transform in the Butcher himself. Learn more details about the season theme in our full Season Guide.

Gameplay Notes

Essence Generators

Decompose is initially used for generating Essence in a pinch as well as generating Corpses to target for Raise Skeleton. Add on Iron Maiden for instantaneous Essence and your Skeletal Mages - Cold and you should have nearly endless resources.

Core Skills

Sever is used as your first damage dealing skill until you unlock your Key Passive. This is replace with Blight which is only used to gain a 10% Shadow Damage multiplier against targets in its ground effect.

Corpse Skills

Corpse Tendrils becomes your opener for every fight. Recast it as soon as its off cooldown to keep everything in one spot. Corpse Explosion helps to add on even more AoE DoT when you stack up enough Corpses.

Rotation Breakdown

Ultimate Skill - Soulrift

Soulrift does a ton of heavy lifting for your progression to the endgame and beyond. It generates a massive amount of Essence for your per second. On top of that it automatically applies Vulnerable so there's no downtime on your easiest damage scaler. It applies a stacking buff that directly multiplies your damage up to 15%!

Key Passive - Affliction

Affliction synergizes with every part of your build and adds another great damage output mechanic to help maintain DPS. Once your target either has Vulnerable applied (nearly all the time), is Crowd Controlled (nearly all the time), or affected by Damage Over Time (all the time), you can cast your Curse on that target (which costs no Essence on this build) for a free damage instance. As well as granting you a bonus 45% damage scaler. Tempering Vulnerable Damage and finding this stat on gear is important for maxing out the inherent multiplier that Affliction has.

Final Journey to Level 60

At this point, most of the key synergies are unlocked and the gameplay loop is almost complete. As you level up, you unlock a lot of extra points that go into various offensive and defensive passives or max out certain skills. Check out the skills progression above to see where to put your points as you go, but feel free to deviate from the order displayed as necessary. If you're not enjoying your Skeletal Minions, replace them with Blood Mist for a great survivability tool. Or consider using the Golems - Bone for a massive tank that also helps with AoE damage and Vulnerable uptime.

Endgame Swaps

The endgame build looks different from the leveling build due to additional synergies you unlock later, leading to several adjustments on the skill tree and sacrificing your Skeletons. To find out more details, check out the Affliction Necromancer Endgame Guide.

You can unlock 12 extra skill points for a total of 71. Check out our Season Rank Guide for more details.

Book of the Dead

The Affliction Necromancer starts off heavily reliant on Skeletons for damage. Your Minions assist with supplemental damage, essential Crowd Control, Essence Generation and Cooldown Reduction. You eventually sacrifice them later for more Damage Scaling or for Survivability stats to get into early Torments.

  • If you're having trouble surviving, use Skeletal Warriors - Defenders to Taunt enemies for you and act as better road bumps.

Unlocking the Book of the Dead

You're able to summon Skeletons as early as level one, with the ability to customize your Skeletal Skirmishers starting at level 5, when the Book of the Dead unlocks. From there, you unlock more types of Skeletal Warriors, Skeletal Mages and eventually Golems as you gain levels. The Golem requires you to complete a Quest, which is detailed in this resource post. You must put Raise Skeleton and Golem on your skill bar to summon them.

Gear & Stat Priorities

Season 1 - Genesis
Affliction Necromancer

To get started as a Affliction Necromancer, focus the most on upgrading your weapon as its damage is the base for all further damage calculations. Otherwise, follow the priority list below. While you don't have all of the desired temper manuals available, simply try to get anything useful on your gear until you acquire the right ones. For example, % Damage, Damage to Close, Vulnerable Damage, etc. all work as long as you activate their conditions. Likewise, you can temper multiple defensive options such as Resistances, Life, Armor to fill gaps in your survivability. Tempering low level gear is relatively cheap and the results can be very impactful.

Tip: For the early game, Elemental Surge Weapon Tempers are very powerful due to their high base damage, especially if you are twinking. If you find these, you may want to keep imprinting them on your weapons for an easy time.

Read more about itemization in our Beginner Articles about Damage, Defense and Stats.

Legendaries & Uniques

Season 1 - Genesis
Affliction Necromancer

The Codex of Power is a collection of Legendary Aspects you can imprint onto Rare or Legendary items at the Occultist. They unlock after completing specific Dungeons located around Sanctuary or salvaging items with these powers. Check out our Map Tool to locate these Dungeons.

For leveling, there are a few powers that can significantly help us if we have the funds to imprint them. In addition, keep an eye out for powerful Unique items you may find for this or other builds.

Jackpot Drops

As you level up, you may get lucky and find some great random drops. Some of these can massively amplify your power and speed up the leveling by switching to another build. Keep in mind that there are many more Aspects and Uniques that can be useful to multiple builds; this just lists some of the most impactful ones. While we usually recommend starting with Endgame Builds at level 60, you often can make them work earlier with these drops:

Runes

Season 1 - Genesis
Affliction Necromancer

You can have up to two Runewords in your setup, each consisting of one Ritual and one Invocation Rune. Socket them in Two-Handed Weapons if your build calls for them, otherwise place them into your Armor pieces to replace normal gems. The Affliction Necromancer focuses on the following combos:

Best in Slot

  • Cir + Gar: Easily stacks 25% chance to Critically Strike while you attack enemies.
  • Yax + Ceh: Summons a Spirit Wolf that freezes enemies and more importantly, applies Vulnerable and they last for 8 Seconds. Make sure to drink a Potion whenever you can.

Alternative choices

As long as you haven't unlocked the final setup or found the top Runes, you can also benefit from these options:

  • Feo + Ner is effectively Unstoppable on demand in combat scenarios. Don't sleep on this one!
  • Yax OR Moni + Lum - Helps to "passively" generate Essence during many scenarios where you cannot otherwise generate Resource and helps to reduce you time spent using Generators or alternative systems.

Learn more about Runes and how they work in our dedicated Runewords Overview.

Mercenaries

Season 1 - Genesis
Affliction Necromancer

Mercenaries are unlocked during the Vessel of Hatred campaign and assist you in battle. There are 4 separate Mercenaries to choose from, each with their own skill trees and abilities. You can have one hired (permanent) mercenary during solo play and a reinforcement who assists you from time to time in certain situations.

Hired: Varyana

Grants stacking Attack Speed bonus and Movement Speed. Great for leveling!

Reinforcement: Raheir

Raheir uses Bastion to grants 90% Damage Reduction while you're in the bubble and applying Unstoppable to you when it's first cast.

How To Level

Season 1 - Genesis
Affliction Necromancer

In Diablo 4, you can level by completing the Campaign, collecting Grim Favors for the Tree of Whispers, completing Helltide activities, grinding Dungeons, clearing Strongholds, fighting in the Undercity of Kurast or interacting with the Seasonal Mechanics. While there are many ways to level up in Diablo 4, not all of them are equal.

Seasonal / Alt Leveling

  • Complete the Seasonal Questline in order to progress your Season Rank to unlock additional perks, loot and work on your Seasonal Powers.
  • Preferably stay on Hard difficulty or above to benefit from the extra XP multipliers as long as your clear speed remains fast. Use power jumps (e.g. key passive, legendary drops) to bump up the difficulty.
  • Complete the Dungeons needed for any Legendary Aspects from your Codex of Power.
  • From level 1-60 you should focus on earning experience in Helltides by combining Helltide activities with Grim Favors for the Tree of Whispers or completing Gathering Legion Events.
  • Strongholds provide a big boost of experience for little time investment. Make sure to clear all of them after around level 50.
  • If you're playing an Alt, make sure to use Tempers when you have the materials to do so.
  • Find the most efficient way of leveling your character in detail with our Speed Leveling Guide.

Endgame Transition

Season 1 - Genesis
Affliction Necromancer

As you approach level 60 with the Affliction Necromancer, you unlock higher item power gear that represents a massive jump in character power. This is a good time to refresh your setup with new tempers and imprints.

After reaching level 60 and finishing the second Capstone Dungeon, Paragon Levels and The Pit unlock. Complete Tier 10 to enter Torment 1, where Diablo IV's Endgame begins.

At this point, your setup should look roughly like this before you dive into min/maxing with Aspects, Uniques, Mythics and more. With better gear, more levels and Glyphs, you can push further and eventually unlock higher difficulties for increased rewards.

This step marks the end of the leveling guide. Below is the Paragon setup to get you started in Torment difficulty but ideally you should now transition towards the endgame version of this build or choose another of your liking.
