FAQ

Introducing Blood Wave Necromancer, famously known as Shadow Surfer or Shadow Wave!

One of the more interesting theory crafts mainly due to the fact that you build it in a way that utilizes Blood and Darkness passives. Ultimate Shadow adds the Darkness Blood Wave, which makes it deal Shadow damage! The build unlocks some significant multipliers that it can't access otherwise, such as Skeletal Warriors - Reapers sacrifice, Gloom and Terror passives while keeping its the ability to Overpower and critically strike! Blood Wave now gain skill ranks, with a Rank 5 bonus adding a substantial multiplier to its damage, scaling with both Damage While Fortified and Damage While Healthy. This bonus is capped at x200%. As a result of these combinations, Shadow Blood Wave benefits from substantial multipliers, making it a very strong build.

Season 1 - Genesis
Blood Wave Necromancer

The Season 12 theme brings Killstreaks and Bloodied Items to Diablo 4. Slay enemies in succession to begin a streak that grants increasingly greater benefits based on which affixes you roll on your gear in addition to seasonal reputation and experience. Tiers are divided as follows: Killstreak (0-99) - Carnage (100-249) - Devastation (250-499) - Bloodbath (500-999) - Massacre (1000-9000) - Fresh Meat! (9001+). For most instanced content types, you can typically expect to reach up to the 4th tier (Bloodbath). Additionally, you can find Bloodied Sigils for Nightmare Dungeons, Infernal Hordes and Lair Bosses that offer greater challenges and rewards (introducing "pseudo Torment 5").

Bloodied Items

Bloodied affixes are bonus affixes that can randomly roll on gear and come in three categories: Rampage (armor), Feast (weapons), Hunger (jewelry). The first two offer minor combat effects while the latter boosts specific loot drops, which doesn't impact your build. Recommended affixes for this build are:

  • Rampage: Increased Main Stat, Gluttony(Max life), Heartbeat (Lucky Hit Chance), Keen(Attack Speed)
  • Feast: Tenderize (Berserking)
  • Hunger: Increased Chance for Runes, Bloodied Items, Increased Experience

技能与玩法

Season 1 - Genesis
Blood Wave Necromancer
Gameplay Notes
  • Blood Wave is the main damage dealer. When cast, this skill does massive AoE Overpower damage while pushing enemies, reducing damage taken, generating Blood Orbs to provide healing and cooldown reduction.
  • Decrepify applies a powerful CC effect that also causes Lucky Hit procs to reduce Cooldowns on your Skills. This skill is not slotted on your skill bar since you don't manually cast this ability manually, Cursed Aura or the Wat rune does the job for you!
  • Blight adds a x10% damage scaler to targets in its puddle.
  • Corpse Explosion consumes Corpses to trigger Grim Harvest, Fueled by Death
  • Blood Mist is a great skill to increase your damage via Dreadful Blood Mist but also granting you immunity and unstoppable to move around through mobs collecting Blood Orbs. Via Enhanced Blood Mist passive reduces the cooldown of Blood Mist as your Blood Wave Overpowers.
  • Sever is only on the skill bar to increase damage and movement speed via Reaper's Pursuit.
Rotation Breakdown

Skill Rotation

  • Once you are in range, you cast Blood Wave to start your damage rotation. The lucky hits of Blood Wave make targets Vulnerable (You need to have one of your affixes on your rings to be "Lucky hit chance to make enemies Vulnerable for 2 seconds") and creates Corpses by procing Hewed Flesh.
  • Tidal casts 2 additional Blood Waves, doing even more damage and giving you more orbs to collect. Tidal has an animation lock, meaning you can't cast another Blood Wave even with a fully reset cooldown until the Tidal animation finishes.
  • This interval creates the perfect opportunity to pick up Blood Orbs and weave in other skills such as corpse explosion, blight and blood mist.
  • Simple rotation is as follows: Cast Blood Wave > Corpse Explosion to consume a corpse, Blight to activate extra shadow damage, Blood Mist to be immune and unstoppable to collect orbs, Cast Blood Wave again and repeat.
  • Blood Orbs resets the timer for Rathma's Vigor causing Blood Wave to do Overpower damage. As long as you stay healthy for 15 seconds, Rathma's Vigor causes Blood Wave to Overpower. Consuming Blood Orbs decreases this 15 second timer to Overpower more frequently.
  • WARNING: Blood Mist can consume your Rathma's Vigor proc, so do not use Mist if you have 15 stacks of Rathma's Vigor unless you really need to, to survive.

Book of the Dead

The Blood Wave Necromancer chooses to sacrifice Skeletal Warriors - Reapers for extra shadow damage, Skeletal Mages - Bone for the massive increase to Overpower Damage and Golems - Iron for Critical Strike Damage bonus.

Early in your progression you sacrifice Skeletal Warriors - Skirmishers to reach 100% critical strike chance.

  • If you're feeling squishy or playing on Hardcore, sacrificing ‍Golems - Blood for Maximum Life and ‍Skeletal Warriors - Defenders for Resistances are great ways to beef up your survivability.

Season 1 - Genesis
Blood Wave Necromancer

This section is designed to guide your Blood Wave Necromancer from a fresh level 60 into the very late endgame using the three variants Starter, Ancestral and Mythic. At the final step, you should be fully decked out with a great all-rounder build. From there, follow the other min/max variants if you want to optimize around certain activities such as Push (Tower/Pit), Speedfarm and more.

If you are fresh in Torment 1 coming from a leveling guide, this is where you begin. Since only some Aspects can be guaranteed from Dungeon unlocks for the Codex of Power, focus on acquiring the additional aspects via gambling with Murmuring Obols or Pale Marks in the Mercenary Den.

Gear & Skills

Gear Setup
Skill Tree
  • Early on in your progression, focus on stacking Maximum Life to survive. As you unlock higher power gear and Paragon points, you naturally scale your character into the higher difficulties and can start replacing some of these rolls with offensive stats or uniques.
  • Gamble pants and rings to acquire Kessime's Legacy and better Fastblood.
  • If you can't find a good 2-Handed Mace, you can use any other 2-Handed Weapon (Axe, Scythe, or Sword) with good affixes for the time being. You can also use any 1-Handed weapon and Focus, but the damage output is significantly lower.
  • Reaching 100% Critical Strike Chance is your number one priority before other stats. Always reliably critting means you can expect a certain damage output, and for monsters to consistently die in the same number of skill uses.
  • Starter version, build utilizes Skeletal Warriors - Skirmishers sacrifice to reach 100% Critical Strike Chance. This will later be swapped for Skeletal Warriors - Reapers sacrifice for extra shadow damage.
  • Finding a high rolled Fastblood is very important to reduce the cooldown of Blood Wave.
  • Cooldown Reduction on your Helmet helps with shorter cooldown of Blood Wave. Tempering ultimate cooldown reduction on your jewelry also helps with this significantly.
  • Once you get a good Kessime's Legacy, the true power of the build will be revealed!
  • It is very important to temper Drain Vitality on your helmet or chest piece to increase your Fortify generation. Fortified status is important for both damage and survivability.
  • Early in your progression, reaching 100% crit chance is difficult due to low gear levels. You rely on Zan + Gar combination to reach this cap.

Season 1 - Genesis
Blood Wave Necromancer

This section describes how to optimize your Blood Wave Nercomancer with the right Item Affixes, Runes and Mercenary choices.

To enable the Blood Wave Necromancer to perform optimally, hunt for these stats on your gear with good rolls and aim to Temper ⚒️ & Masterwork Capstone them accordingly. Keep in mind that certain stats, such as Extra Size Tempers, Attack Speed, Critical Strike Chance and more, have caps that may affect your priorities according to the items and Paragon points available at that moment.

Recommended Endgame Stat Thresholds
100% Critical Strike Chance
80% Chance for Blood Wave to do double damage
Damage While Healthy + Damage While fortified > 666% - Due to the Blood Wave rank 5 skill bonus reaching this cap triples Blood Wave's damage.
Recommended Endgame Stat Thresholds 2
>125,000 Toughness >16,000 Armor
>2,800 to All Resistance
>8,000 Life

Recommended Consumables: Soothing Spices, Reddamine Buzz for more survivability. Sage's Whisper for Intelligence and Elixir of Advantage II for Attack Speed + Lucky Hit Chance. If you need more survivability, Elixir of Fortitude II is a good option instead of Elixir of Advantage II.

Guide Notes

Take a look into this section for a deeper dive on frequently asked questions, common mistakes and the underlying mechanics of how the Blood Wave Necromancer works.

Frequently Asked Questions

The build works really well when you decimate everything in seconds, but may get overwhelmed if fights are long against high level monsters. There are several adjustments you can make when you have trouble with more difficult content:

  • Focus more on Armor & Resists, making sure that they are always capped especially as you transition into higher torment difficulties.
  • Use defensive consumables. Especially the Elixir of Fortitude II.
  • You can swap Golems - Iron sacrifice with Golems - Blood sacrifice to maximize your tankiness.

Generally hardcore and softcore share the same builds. Other than going slower and paying more attention to threats around you, there are some imporant things to consider:

  • Focus more on maximum life rolls, for example replacing DPS stats like main attributes, attack speed and additive increased damage rolls. Also masterwork life more than normal if no other crucial stats have priority.
  • Sacrifice Golems - Blood for more Maximum Life.
  • Play on a slightly lower difficulty than the build normally would until you've adjusted to the increase in danger, or got better gear.

Mechanics

  • Ultimate Shadow adds the Darkness Skill Tag and Shadow Damage Tag. You can scale your damage with all three Passive damage clusters in your skill tree, as well as powerful Glyphs and Paragon Boards you otherwise wouldnt be able to.
  • Tidal casts 2 additional Blood Waves, doing even more damage and giving you more orbs to collect. Tidal has an animation lock, meaning you can't cast another Blood Wave even with a fully reset cooldown until the Tidal animation finishes.
