Death Trap Rogue Endgame Build Guide for Diablo IV Season 12 - Slaughter

FAQ

Welcome to the Death Trap Rogue Endgame Guide! This build focuses on casting Death Trap all over the screen and is infamous for causing the server to lag and making enemies fly across the entire screen.

This playstyle is achieved by stacking enough Cooldown Reduction to get Death Trap below 10 seconds cooldown, and then triggering Preparation twice in one attack using Beastfall Boots with 150 Max Energy to instantly reset the skill. The changes to Masterworking mean you can spam Death Trap as early as Ancestral with specific gearing choices.

A big advantage of this playstyle is the constant resets of all of your abilities and the opportunity to pull enemies together at will, which makes the build stand out and defuses the danger in most elite fights.

While the best setups run the aforementioned Beastfall Boots combo, it is possible to get started without them by using the Exposure key passive and using a skill like Flurry to reset your Death Trap cooldown. Let us jump in and see what it is all about!

Note that information outside of Build Variants is described from the perspective of the Mythic variant.

Season 1 - Genesis
Dance of Knives Rogue

The Season 12 theme brings Killstreaks and Bloodied Items to Diablo 4. Slay enemies in succession to begin a streak that grants increasingly greater benefits based on which affixes you roll on your gear in addition to seasonal reputation and experience. Tiers are divided as follows: Killstreak (0-99) - Carnage (100-249) - Devastation (250-499) - Bloodbath (500-999) - Massacre (1000-9000) - Fresh Meat! (9001+). For most instanced content types, you can typically expect to reach up to the 4th tier (Bloodbath). Additionally, you can find Bloodied Sigils for Nightmare Dungeons, Infernal Hordes and Lair Bosses that offer greater challenges and rewards (introducing "pseudo Torment 5").

Bloodied Items

Bloodied affixes are bonus affixes that can randomly roll on gear and come in three categories: Rampage (armor), Feast (weapons), Hunger (jewelry). The first two offer minor combat effects while the latter boosts specific loot drops, which doesn't impact your build. Recommended affixes for this build are:

  • Rampage: +125 Maximum Life per Kill Streak Tier, 8% Attack Speed per Kill Streak Tier, Main Stat per Kill Streak Tier
  • Feast: Gain Berserking for 8 Seconds
  • Hunger: 13% increased chance for Hunger Items during Kill Streaks

There is more to discover including the new seasonal Slaughterhouses and how to transform into the Butcher himself. Learn more details about the season theme in our full Season Guide.

Gameplay Notes
  • Flurry is only used in the Starter Variant to bridge the gaps for when Death Trap is inevitably on Cooldown due to not having good enough Death Trap Cooldown Reduction tempers and skill ranks.
  • Death Trap is our Ultimate Skill and main damage dealer. With enough cooldown reduction, we can get to the point where we can spam this indefinitely and fill our entire resource bar with Beastfall Boots in combination with Aftermath and an Energy Restore temper on your ring.
  • Dash is used for mobility and stacking Momentum.
  • You want to use Poison Trap against Elites for its brief knockdown and increased damage dealt through Subverting Poison Trap.
  • Concealment is used as our source of Unstoppable, 100% Crit Chance and Vulnerable application.
  • Caltrops adds a powerful damage buff with Enhanced Caltrops. Use Disciplined Caltrops for as long as you need extra Critical Strike Chance, and swap to Methodical Caltrops when it is no longer needed.
  • Smoke Grenade adds another powerful damage buff through Enhanced Smoke Grenade, and applies poisoning required for Alchemical Advantage through Subverting Smoke Grenade.
  • We go back to using Momentum for general farming, as the buff is permanent and only requires you to use Dash 10 times in total to have permanent increased damage and defensives. For endgame, you want to swap to Exposure as it does more damage when enemies are alive for longer.
Rotation Breakdown

Skill Rotation

  • Use Dash repeatedly to stack up your Momentum.
    • You do this fastest by alternating between Dash and Death Trap.
  • Versus Bosses and Elites: Apply your various debuffs on the target and make sure they do not fall off.
    • Start with Caltrops and keep them inside the area for Enhanced Caltrops.
    • Use Poison Trap to knock down Elites, and deal increased damage through Subverting Poison Trap. This also activates Alchemical Advantage.
    • Use Smoke Grenade to make them take more damage, and increase your attack speed through Alchemical Advantage.
  • Use Concealment whenever you need Unstoppable and to apply Vulnerable.
  • Use a Healing Potion for Unstable Elixirs.
  • Cast Death Trap for a massive nuke.
  • Use your Evade (especially if you have Jah equipped) and Dash to keep moving.
  • You no longer need to stand near enemies during Unstoppable and versus bosses, as Supreme Death Trap now works while standing in distant range as well.

Preparation - Spend resources to reset your Ultimate Skill, which in turn resets all your other skills.

This choice is the key to playing this build, as it allows us to immediately reset Death Trap and the rest of our abilities all the time.

Season 1 - Genesis
Death Trap Rogue

This section is designed to guide your Death Trap Rogue from a fresh level 60 into the very late endgame using the three variants Starter, Ancestral, and Mythic. At the final step, you should be fully decked out with a great all-rounder build. From there, follow the other min/max variants if you want to optimize around certain activities such as Push (Tower/Pit), Speedfarm, and more.

If you are fresh in Torment 1 coming from a leveling guide, this is where you begin. Since only some Aspects can be guaranteed from Dungeon unlocks for the Codex of Power, focus on acquiring the additional aspects via gambling with Murmuring Obols or Pale Marks in the Mercenary Den.

Gear & Skills

Gear Setup
Skill Tree
  • Early on in your progression, focus on stacking Maximum Life to survive. As you unlock higher power gear and Paragon points, you naturally scale your character into the higher difficulties and can start replacing some of these rolls with offensive stats or uniques.
  • In the Starter Variant, we use Flurry to bridge the gaps in our Cooldowns for Death Trap until our gear is ready to move to the Ancestral variant.
  • In order to spam our ultimate non-stop, we need to spend 75 energy for each 5 seconds of cooldown you have on Death Trap. In other words, you need 300 max energy if you have 20 second cooldown, 225 max energy for 15 second cooldown, and 150 max energy for 10 second cooldown.
    • Without Beastfall Boots and some masterworking, this is impossible. Therefore, we play with Exposure to reset the cooldown.

Guide Notes

Once a guide is released, many players have questions on why and how we are approaching certain choices. In this section, you can find the answers to the questions that have been asked the most.

Frequently Asked Questions

The build works really well when you decimate everything in seconds, but you may get overwhelmed if fights are long against high level monsters. There are several adjustments you can make when you have trouble with more difficult content:

  • Use defensive consumables (Reddamine Buzz, Soothing Spices, Elixir of Fortitude II).
  • Roll Maximum Life instead of offensive stats on as many pieces as possible.
  • Kite enemies when they become Unstoppable.
  • Replace an offensive rune with Mot, Que or Xal.
Mechanics

You gain 35 energy from Aftermath, 25 from Beastfall Boots. This means you need Casting Ultimate Skill Restores Primary Resource on items and have enough energy.

With 41 Energy Restored on one Ring (Masterwork Crit + GA), and 32 on one (Just GA), you restore 151 energy per Death Trap Cast if you have 490 Strength. If you find yourself with too little energy, change one or two of your Dexterity Gems for Strength (2-3% damage loss until you get it from Paragon).

You also need your Beastfall Boots to have +25 or higher Maximum Energy with 25 Quality to have enough Maximum Resource using Elixir of Resourcefulness II. If you do not have this, drop Malice on your amulet for a Maximum Resource roll instead.

Use this Calculator to find out how much Strength (for resource gen) or more Energy from temper etc you need. You can find a guide on how to use it here.

The energy is depleted and restored at a very specific sequence, which means that you:

  1. Cast Death Trap
  2. Beastfall Boots gives you 25 energy
  3. Aftermath gives you 35 energy
  4. Temper gives you Energy
  5. Beastfall Boots eats the energy given by Aftermath
  6. Cast Death Trap… Repeat

We aim for 91% Attack Speed in town to reach the 9 frame breakpoint using Bow and Swords with Haste and Alchemical Advantage (120.8% in total).

Mechanics

Unknown to many, Rogues can swap their equipped weapons for damage calculations. This can only be done for skills without an assigned weapon, meaning Smoke Grenade, Poison Trap, and Death Trap.

For Pit Pushing, this is important as you deal significantly more damage using your Crossbow (at the cost of attacking slower). Because you need a lot of attack speed to attack faster, the raw damage gain from attacking with a slower weapon boosts your DPS significantly. To swap to your Crossbow, you must cast Caltrops as this forces your character to equip its ranged weapon. This means your ideal rotation looks something like: Caltrops > Poison Trap > Smoke Grenade > Death Trap.

  • Dark Shroud stacks damage reduction additively for each active shadow. Due to the additive stacking, each increase in the skill's rank and active shadows boosts your survivability exponentially.
  • Shadows have a 1.5 seconds cooldown between losing stacks, but the damage reduction still applies depending on how many are active at all times.
  • At maximum stacks, your effective hit points (EHP) scale as follows in these examples:
    • Rank 1: 66.6% more EHP
    • Rank 5: 92.3% more EHP
    • Rank 10: 138.1% more EHP
    • Rank 15: 215% more EHP
    • Rank 20: 354.5% more EHP
    • Rank 31: Invincibility

Build Summary

The Death Trap Rogue is a fun to play, fast-paced tactical genius that performs well in almost any scenario. With a range of tricks and devices up your sleeve, and constant resets on all of your cooldowns, you can deal with anything.

Key Takeaways
  • Invest in Energy recovery as much as possible early on so you can spam Flurry for Exposure until you can do the 150 Energy + Beastfall Boots combo.
  • In the endgame, you want to cast Concealment to apply Vulnerable and gain 100% Crit Chance.
  • Remember to cast Dash to gain stacks of Momentum if you play it instead of Exposure.
  • Drop Caltrops, Smoke Grenade, and Poison Trap on Bosses and other tough enemies.
