Welcome to the Lightning Storm Druid Leveling Guide! This build combines massive AoE attacks with a caster playstyle, unleashing devastating damage from afar.
Lightning Storm Druid Leveling Guide for Diablo IV Season 12 - Slaughter
The Lightning Storm Druid requires no additional setup to get started, making it a great plug-and-play option. If you are looking for an electrifying way to level up, zap enemies with Lightning, and clear out groups of foes, then this guide is for you.
Lightning Storm is your main damage ability. It is a Channeled Core Skill that casts an increasing number of lightning strikes the longer you channel it, up to a maximum of 5. Lightning Storm excels at clearing packs of monsters, while its weakness lies in its single target damage. Because of the random nature of these strikes, you mainly rely on RNG for multiple strikes to hit the same target.
Companion Skills alongside Clarity grant you a large amount of Critical Strike Chance and damage. The Companion Skills themselves have little utility outside of the early game, and merely serve as a tool for you to leverage Clarity's bonuses. Likewise, another noteworthy source of power is Retaliation, which grants you a tremendous damage multiplier based on your amount of Fortify.
Early on, this build leverages Wind Shear as the primary method of generating Spirit, applying Vulnerable, and increasing your Movement Speed. Blood Howl rounds out your kit nicely by providing numerous benefits when you cast it, including Critical Strike Chance via Nighthowler's, substantial amounts of Fortify from Skinwalker's, and extra damage from Backlash to list a few.
This guide teaches you all you need to know to reach the endgame in Diablo 4 with the Lightning Storm Druid. Let's get started!
赛季主题与构筑适配
The Season 12 theme brings Killstreaks and Bloodied Items to Diablo 4. Slay enemies in succession to begin a streak that grants increasingly greater benefits based on which affixes you roll on your gear in addition to seasonal reputation and experience. Tiers are divided as follows: Killstreak (0-99) - Carnage (100-249) - Devastation (250-499) - Bloodbath (500-999) - Massacre (1000-9000) - Fresh Meat! (9001+). For most instanced content types, you can typically expect to reach up to the 4th tier (Bloodbath). Additionally, you can find Bloodied Sigils for Nightmare Dungeons, Infernal Hordes and Lair Bosses that offer greater challenges and rewards (introducing "pseudo Torment 5").
Bloodied Items
Bloodied affixes are bonus affixes that can randomly roll on gear and come in three categories: Rampage (armor), Feast (weapons), and Hunger (jewelry). The first two offer minor combat effects while the latter boosts specific loot drops, which doesn't impact your build. Recommended affixes for this build are:
- Rampage: Movement Speed, Resource Cost Reduction, Attack Speed
- Feast: Berserking, Restore Primary Resource, BloodSplosion
- Hunger: Prioritize increased XP. Otherwise, use what you prefer/have access to.

技能与玩法
Getting Started
To kick things off, allocate skill points in Wind Shear to unlock the Core Skill section. Use this skill to generate Spirit and apply Vulnerable to your enemies. Your third point unlocks Fierce Wind Shear, increasing your Movement Speed in the early game.
Lightning Storm
After unlocking the Core Skill section, assign skill points to Lightning Storm and its upgrade Primal Lightning Storm. This upgrade equips you with the ability to Immobilize targets, enabling substantial damage bonuses later on in Nature's Reach and Electric Shock. Invest a few more skill points into maximizing Lightning Storm's ranks as soon as possible.
Channel Lightning Storm as your main damage dealer. Channeled Skills inherit your Attack Speed bonuses, but require you to stand still while channeling. When preparing for a fight, hold down Lightning Storm to build up its size. Maintain its maximum size by channeling at least once every 6 seconds, made possible once you've unlocked Enhanced Lightning Storm.
Spirit Boons
At this stage, you gain access to Spirit Boons - the Druid's unique class mechanic. Check out the Spirit Boon Progression below!
Companion Skills & Blood Howl
Unlock Digitigrade Gait, Blood Howl, and Backlash to progress to the Companion Skills.
- Blood Howl is a very versatile Skill, able to refresh its own Cooldown thanks to Enhanced Blood Howl. It offers multiple benefits that empower you upon cast, so ensure you're casting it often:
- Damage (from Backlash).
- Fortify (from Skinwalker's).
- Damage Reduction (from Vigilance).
- Movement Speed (from Digitigrade Gait).
- Critical Strike Chance (from Nighthowler's).
- Spirit (from Innate Blood Howl and Vocalized Empowerment).
Upon gaining access to the Companion Skills, put a skill point into Poison Creeper, Wolves and Ravens, respectively.
- Upgrade Poison Creeper with Ferocious Poison Creeper to increase its Poison damage and Poison duration by a considerable amount.
- Likewise, spend 2 points for Enhanced Ravens's bonus Critical Strike Chance and Ferocious Raven's Vulnerable.
Early on, use the active components of Companion Skills for a burst of damage against Elites and Bosses. Poison Creeper deals very potent Poison damage and can single-handedly clear packs. As monsters become increasingly difficult to kill, stack Clarity by casting all your Companion Skills and channel Lightning Storm for as long as possible.
Clarity
With all Companion Skills unlocked, it's time to pick up max Ranks of Clarity, a very strong passive for your build.
- It functions on a stack basis, receiving one stack after casting a Companion Skill. Each stack increases your damage and Critical Strike Chance. You can only have a maximum of 3 stacks at a given time, but the stacks do not have a timer and you can freely cast other Non-Core / Non-Wrath skills in-between without consuming them.
- Lightning Storm is a Channeled Skill, and when cast with Clarity stacks, the Critical Strike Chance and damage bonuses persist throughout the entire duration of the channel. This is known as snapshotting, offering a large amount of Critical Strike Chance and damage to your Lightning Storm. As such, the best way to use Lightning Storm is to tap it when clearing easy content, and to fully channel it with maximum stacks of Clarity snapshotted against Elites and Bosses.
Key Passive
Perfect Storm is your Key Passive. It offers a substantial damage multiplier and a small amount of Spirit when you cast Lightning Storm. Pick up Nature's Reach on your way there. What's more, if you have unlocked the Overload Druid Boon, spend your points on Neurotoxin and Envenom to increase your Critical Strike Damage against Poisoned enemies.
Defenses
The Lightning Storm Druid makes use of its ranged capabilities to stay away from danger. However, in certain situations taking damage is unavoidable. As such, invest into Circle of Life to keep your Life topped off. As you near max level, ensure you're using Ancestral Fortitude and Vigilance for some added Toughness.
Final Journey to Level 60
At this point, most of the key synergies are unlocked and the gameplay loop is almost complete. As you level up, you unlock a lot of extra points that go into various offensive and defensive passives or max out certain skills. Check out the skills progression above to see where to put your points as you go, but feel free to deviate from the order displayed as necessary.
You can unlock 12 extra skill points for a total of 71. Check out our Season Rank Guide for more details.
Druid Spirit Boons
Druids can choose 5 out of 16 Passive bonuses (Boons) from 4 different Spirits. Bond with one of the Spirits (by clicking its Portrait in the Spirit Boon menu) to activate two of its Boons. Use the following Boons:
Deer Spirit: Gift of the Stag
Eagle Spirit: Scythe Talons
Wolf Spirit: Pack Leader
Snake Spirit: Overload
Bond with the Eagle Spirit and activate Avian Wrath.
Prioritize obtaining Pack Leader as your first Boon. Iron Feather is viable if you require additional Toughness, as is Advantageous Beast for additional Movement Speed.

Gear & Stat Priorities
To get started as a Lightning Storm Druid, focus the most on upgrading your weapon as its damage is the base for all further damage calculations. Otherwise, follow the priority list below. While you don't have all of the desired temper manuals available, simply try to get anything useful on your gear until you acquire the right ones. For example, % Damage, Damage to Close, Vulnerable Damage, etc. all work as long as you activate their conditions. Likewise, you can temper multiple defensive options such as Resistances, Life, Armor to fill gaps in your survivability. Tempering low level gear is relatively cheap and the results can be very impactful.
Tip: For the early game, Elemental Surge Weapon Tempers are very powerful due to their high base damage, especially if you are twinking. If you find these, you may want to keep imprinting them on your weapons for an easy time.
Read more about itemization in our Beginner Articles about Damage, Defense and Stats.
Legendaries & Uniques
The Codex of Power is a collection of Legendary Aspects you can imprint onto Rare or Legendary items at the Occultist. They unlock after completing specific Dungeons located around Sanctuary or salvaging items with these powers. Check out our Map Tool to locate these Dungeons.
For leveling, there are a few powers that can significantly help us if we have the funds to imprint them. In addition, keep an eye out for powerful Unique items you may find for this or other builds.

Jackpot Drops
As you level up, you may get lucky and find some great random drops. Some of these can massively amplify your power and speed up the leveling by switching to another build. Keep in mind that there are many more Aspects and Uniques that can be useful to multiple builds; this just lists some of the most impactful ones. While we usually recommend starting with Endgame Builds at level 60, you often can make them work earlier with these drops:
Build-defining Aspects
- Shockwave (enables the Pulverize Druid)
- Aftershock / Subterranean (enhances the Landslide Druid)
- Stampede / Alpha / Stormcrow's (enhances the Companion Druid)

Runes
You can have up to two Runewords in your setup, each consisting of one Ritual and one Invocation Rune. Socket them in Two-Handed Weapons if your build calls for them, otherwise place them into your Armor pieces to replace normal gems. The Lightning Storm Druid focuses on the following combos:
Best in Slot for Leveling
- Cem + Lum - Grants a sizeable burst of Spirit when you Evade, helping you manage your Resource early on.
- Cir + Gar - Offers you a big chunk of Critical Strike Chance, which refreshes itself and persists for a few seconds.
Alternative choices
As long as you haven't unlocked the final setup or found the top Runes, you can also benefit from these options:
- Kry - Grouping enemies massively improves your Lightning Storm's lethality, allowing your lightning strikes to hit multiple targets at once.
- Lith / Nagu / Igni / Ahu - Powerful alternatives of generating Offering, each having a different requirement.
- Xal - Grants a sizeable Maximum Life multiplier that aids your survivability.
- Ohm - War Cry is a good damage buff that lasts for a moderate duration.
- Que - Earthen Bulwark is an excellent defensive tool with additional benefits if you invest in it in your skill tree.
- Jah - Teleport is a versatile Mobility Skill used often in Speedfarming setups for faster clearing speeds.
- Qua - Helps you reach Movement Speed cap early on.

Mercenaries
Mercenaries are unlocked during the Vessel of Hatred campaign and assist you in battle. There are 4 separate Mercenaries to choose from, each with their own skill trees and abilities. You can have one Hired (permanent) mercenary during solo play and a Reinforcement who assists you from time to time in certain situations.
- Hired: Varyana
This Mercenary grants you increased Movement Speed as you gain Massacre Stacks. Remember that these stacks reset if you have not killed any enemies after 7 seconds. In addition to this, her Bloodthirst and Hysteria Skills offer some much appreciated Attack Speed.
- Reinforcement: Raheir
Bastion is a phenomenal defensive reinforcement, temporarily providing 90% Damage Reduction and granting you Unstoppable.

How To Level
In Diablo 4, you can level by completing the Campaign, collecting Grim Favors for the Tree of Whispers, completing Helltide activities, grinding Dungeons, clearing Strongholds, fighting in the Undercity of Kurast or interacting with the Seasonal Mechanics. While there are many ways to level up in Diablo 4, not all of them are equal.
Campaign Leveling
- For your first character in Diablo 4, completing the Campaign provides all the background lore information but is not necessary.
- The original Campaign is the slowest way to level, but it's worth experiencing the Campaign and Diablo 4's storyline at least once.
- To play Seasonal Content you need to have completed or skipped the Campaign.
- After finishing the campaign, you should focus on earning experience in Helltides by combining it with Grim Favors for the Tree of Whispers or completing Gathering Legion Events.
- Strongholds provide a big boost of experience for little time investment. Make sure to clear all of them after around level 50.
Vessel of Hatred Campaign
- This is the fastest way to level up in a fresh season.
- Stay on Normal difficulty and skip as many monsters as possible while rushing all main objectives for massive XP spikes.
- You can also just partially complete and skip the remaining Campaign at any time from the main menu to get an early boost until your build is online.
- After finishing the campaign, you should focus on earning experience in Helltides by combining it with Grim Favors for the Tree of Whispers or completing Gathering Legion Events.
- Strongholds provide a big boost of experience for little time investment. They are a good choice to finish the final levels quickly.

Seasonal / Alt Leveling
- Complete the Seasonal Questline in order to progress your Season Rank to unlock additional perks, loot and work on your Seasonal Powers.
- Preferably stay on Hard difficulty or above to benefit from the extra XP multipliers as long as your clear speed remains fast. Use power jumps (e.g. key passive, legendary drops) to bump up the difficulty.
- Complete the Dungeons needed for any Legendary Aspects from your Codex of Power.
- From level 1-60, you should focus on earning experience in Helltides by combining Helltide activities with Grim Favors for the Tree of Whispers or completing Gathering Legion Events.
- Strongholds provide a big boost of experience for little time investment. Make sure to clear all of them after around level 50.
- If you're playing an Alt, make sure to use Tempers when you have the materials to do so.

Tips and Tricks
- Imprint Important Aspects on Amulet
- It is a good idea to put your best Offensive Aspect on your Amulet, since it is usually not replaced as often as other gear.
- Compare Your Items
- Press Shift to activate item comparison. Use this build guide's Stat Priorities section to identify potential upgrades.
- Choose an Easy Difficulty
- Ideally, start on Normal or Hard difficulty for the extra XP modifier, then try to go higher when it's way too easy. If that slows you down noticeably, it's better to stay on a lower difficulty.
- Use Your Materials
- There's no point in holding on to your gold or materials for later. Use everything to speed up your journey to 60. If you're twinking, make sure to craft the Allowance Caches from the Alchemist at level 20 and if available, equip your Mythic Uniques at level 35 to make the leveling a breeze.
Speedrun Route
- If you're looking to min/max your time spent on the way to 60 instead of following a generic guideline, you need to use a specific strategy.
- This usually includes farming certain activities up to a specified level and then switching to other tasks while gathering XP in high density areas and pushing the difficulty as high as you can.
- We update this strategy seasonally in our Speed Leveling Guide.
Endgame Transition
As you approach level 60 with the Lightning Storm Druid, you unlock higher item power gear that represents a massive jump in character power. This is a good time to refresh your setup with new tempers and imprints.
After reaching level 60 and finishing the second Capstone Dungeon, Paragon Levels and The Pit unlock. Complete Tier 10 to enter Torment 1, where Diablo IV's Endgame begins.
At this point, your setup should look roughly like this before you dive into min/maxing with Aspects, Uniques, Mythics and more. With better gear, more levels and Glyphs, you can push further and eventually unlock higher difficulties for increased rewards.
This step marks the end of the leveling guide. Below is the Paragon setup to get you started in Torment difficulty, but ideally, you should now transition towards the endgame version of this build or choose another of your liking.

BD 总结
The Lightning Storm Druid excels at obliterating packs of enemies with its large AoE attacks. Unfortunately, toward the middle of the leveling experience it begins to struggle with single target damage against healthier enemies such as Bosses, and requires specific Uniques to scale properly into the Endgame.
- Invest into Spirit Per Second affixes on gear to help with Resource management.
- Snapshot Clarity to greatly improve Lightning Storm's damage. Make sure to look out for Clarity ranks on Amulets to make the most of this Passive.
- Immobilize enemies for bonus damage, and apply Poison to monsters to make use of Envenom.
