Rock Splitter Thorns Spiritborn Leveling Guide for Diablo IV Season 12 - Slaughter

by katt/Season 12 - Slaughter/Last Updated: 2026年4月27日Maxroll 导入

Welcome to the Rock Splitter Thorns Spiritborn Leveling Guide! This is a melee build that uses the Basic Skill Rock Splitter to deal Thorns damage on every third attack with Accelerated Rock Splitter.

This build doesn't require you to manage any resources and has no required aspects, however while leveling we use consumables to give us a high amount of Thorns. Starting at level 20 we start using the following consumables:

  • Elixir of Iron Barbs from Levels 20-49
  • Elixir of Iron Barbs II at Level 50+
  • Scents of the Desert Afternoon at Level 50+

The Gorilla Primary Spirit Hall is used for some additional thorns damage and to generate Barrier. While the Jaguar Secondary Sprit Hall lets us generate Ferocity for increased Attack Speed by killing enemies or hitting a Boss.

There are more things to unlock later down the line, which are explained in the Rock Splitter Thorns Spiritborn Endgame Guide. Until then, this guide teaches you all about how to reach the endgame in Diablo 4 with the Rock Splitter Thorns Spiritborn. Let's get started!

Season 1 - Genesis
Rock Splitter Thorns Spiritborn

The Season 12 theme brings Killstreaks and Bloodied Items to Diablo 4. Slay enemies in succession to begin a streak that grants increasingly greater benefits based on which affixes you roll on your gear in addition to seasonal reputation and experience. Tiers are divided as follows: Killstreak (0-99) - Carnage (100-249) - Devastation (250-499) - Bloodbath (500-999) - Massacre (1000-9000) - Fresh Meat! (9001+). For most instanced content types, you can typically expect to reach up to the 4th tier (Bloodbath). Additionally, you can find Bloodied Sigils for Nightmare Dungeons, Infernal Hordes and Lair Bosses that offer greater challenges and rewards (introducing "pseudo Torment 5").

Bloodied Items

Bloodied affixes are bonus affixes that can randomly roll on gear and come in three categories: Rampage (armor), Feast (weapons), Hunger (jewelry). The first two offer minor combat effects while the latter boosts specific loot drops, which doesn't impact your build. Recommended affixes for this build are:

  • Rampage: Keen
  • Feast: Tenderize
  • Hunger: Tenderize

There is more to discover including the new seasonal Slaughterhouses and how to transform into the Butcher himself. Learn more details about the season theme in our full Season Guide.

Gameplay Notes

Getting Started

To start off we put one point into Rock Splitter, which is our primary damage source, one point into Enhanced Rock Splitter, and one point into Accelerated Rock Splitter. Spamming this ability applies Thorns on each third attack. No Core skill is taken, but points are put into Follow Through to further boost Rock Splitter damage.

Focus Skills

In the Focus tree we start by taking Toxic Skin which is vital to the Rock Splitter Spiritborn. Replenishing Toxic Skin is always active once the skill is learned and equipped on your skill bar, doubling all Thorns damage dealt to Poisoned enemies. Vortex is used to pull enemies together and knock them down with Measured Vortex as long as we have a Barrier active.

Defensive Skills and Passives

Here we pick up Armored Hide for some solid defenses from Resolve and 100% Block, as well as a source of Unstoppable. Enhanced Armored Hide gives us a bit of Thorns while Armored Hide is active and gives us max Resolve. Next we grab Bastion which gives you a nice source of Thorns early on as well as a boost to your Thorns while you have a Barrier active. Lastly we take Scourge to Poison, Fear and Slow enemies as well as getting increased damage.

Rotation Breakdown

Ultimate Skill

The Protector provides a Spiritborn with additional Thorns damage, increased damage, reduced damage taken from enemies, and is an incredible source of Barrier, it also boosts our damage even more thanks to the Supremacy passive.

Spirit Hall

At level 15, you can unlock your class mechanic called Spirit Hall. There you may choose one out of the four spirit guardians for both the primary and secondary slots. You start with the Gorilla Primary Spirit Hall for its Thorns damage and Barrier generation. Jaguar Secondary Sprit Hall lets us generate Ferocity for increased Attack Speed by killing enemies or hitting a Boss.

Key Passive

Adaptive Stances is your key passive of choice. Since you utilize all four spirits, we are frequently gaining all of the bonuses from this passive. Movement speed, Damage Reduction, Attack Speed, and Life per Second. With the swaps happening frequently, you have a very high uptime on the Core Stat increase as well. Since Rock Splitter is the skill used most often, you generally gain 30% Damage Reduction from Adaptive Stances.

Final Journey to Level 60

At this point, most of the key synergies are unlocked and the gameplay loop is almost complete. As you level up, you unlock a lot of extra points that go into various offensive and defensive passives or max out certain skills. Check out the skills progression above to see where to put your points as you go, but feel free to deviate from the order displayed as necessary. For example, you can pick up Auspicious earlier for extra defense or leave out some of the Ultimate passive cluster nodes until later if you find yourself rarely using The Protector.

You can find more info on the transition into endgame in the Rocksplitter Thorns Endgame Build Guide

You can unlock 12 extra skill points for a total of 71. Check out our Season Rank Guide for more details.

Spirit Hall

Primary: Gorilla gives us a solid amount of Thorns damage and Barrier generation.

Secondary: Jaguar increases your Attack Speed and maintains your Ferocity buffs.

Gear & Stat Priorities

Season 1 - Genesis
Rock Splitter Thorns Spiritborn

To get started as Rock Splitter Thorns Spiritborn, focus the most on upgrading your weapon as its damage is the base for all further damage calculations. Otherwise, follow the priority list below. While you don't have all of the desired temper manuals available, simply try to get anything useful on your gear until you get the right ones. For example, % Damage, Damage to Close, Vulnerable Damage, etc. all work as long as you activate their conditions. Likewise, you can temper multiple defensive options such as Resistances, Life, Armor to fill gaps in your survivability. Tempering low level gear is relatively cheap and the results can be very impactful.

Tip: For the early game, Elemental Surge Weapon Tempers are very powerful due to their high base damage, especially if you are leveling an alt. If you find these, you may want to keep tempering them on your weapons for an easy time.

Read more about itemization in our Beginner Articles about Damage, Defense and Stats.

Legendaries & Uniques

Season 1 - Genesis
Rock Splitter Thorns Spiritborn

The Codex of Power is a collection of Legendary Aspects you can imprint onto Rare or Legendary items at the Occultist. They unlock after completing specific Dungeons located around Sanctuary or salvaging items with these powers. Check out our Map Tool to locate these Dungeons.

For leveling, there are a few powers that can significantly help us if we have the funds to imprint them. In addition, keep an eye out for powerful Unique items you may find for this or other builds.

Keep in mind that there are many more Aspects and Uniques that can be useful to multiple builds; this just lists some of the most impactful ones. While we usually recommend starting with Endgame Builds at level 60, you often can make them work earlier with these drops:

Build-defining Uniques

  1. Rod of Kepeleke (used in some of the highest Pit clearing builds)
  2. Jacinth Shell (amplifies multiple Endgame Builds)

Runes

Season 1 - Genesis
Rock Splitter Thorns Spiritborn

You can have up to two Runewords in your setup, each consisting of one Ritual and one Invocation Rune. Socket them in Two-Handed Weapons if your build calls for them, otherwise place them into your Armor pieces to replace normal gems. The Rock Splitter Thorns Spiritborn focuses on the following combos:

Best in Slot

  • Moni + Thul - Invokes Frost Nova freezing enemies and applying Vulnerable.
  • Neo + Kry - Constantly pull in enemies with Vortex

Alternative choices

As long as you haven't unlocked the final setup or found the top Runes, you can also benefit from these options:

  • Ceh - Summons wolves that apply Vulnerable to anything they hit.
  • Que - Good Barrier generation as the barrier last 3 seconds
  • Mot - Generates Dark Shroud for extra defense
  • Zec - Helps reduce The Protector cooldown
  • Qua - A massive Movement Speed boost while leveling
  • Xal - For extra defense

Learn more about Runes and how they work in our dedicated Runewords Overview.

Mercenaries

Season 1 - Genesis
Rock Splitter Thorns Spiritborn

Mercenaries are unlocked during the Vessel of Hatred campaign and assist you in battle. There are 4 separate Mercenaries to choose from, each with their own skill trees and abilities. You can have one hired (permanent) Mercenary during solo play and a reinforcement who assist you from time to time in certain situations.

Hired: Raheir

Raheir is used for the additional resistances from Raheir's Aegis as well as the damage bonuses granted by Inspiration when he uses Ground Slam or Bastion

Reinforcement: Varyana

Varyana is used to boost your Attack Speed through her skill Bloodthirst

How To Level

Season 1 - Genesis
Rock Splitter Thorns Spiritborn

In Diablo 4, you can level by completing the Campaign, collecting Grim Favors for the Tree of Whispers, completing Helltide activities, grinding Dungeons, clearing Strongholds, fighting in the Undercity of Kurast or interacting with the Seasonal Mechanics. While there are many ways to level up in Diablo 4, not all of them are equal.

Seasonal / Alt Leveling

  • Complete the Seasonal Questline in order to progress your Season Rank to unlock additional perks, loot and work on your Seasonal Powers.
  • Preferably stay on Hard difficulty or above to benefit from the extra XP multipliers as long as your clear speed remains fast. Use power jumps (e.g. key passive, legendary drops) to bump up the difficulty.
  • Complete the Dungeons needed for any Legendary Aspects from your Codex of Power.
  • From level 1-60 you should focus on earning experience in Helltides by combining Helltide activities with Grim Favors for the Tree of Whispers or completing Gathering Legion Events.
  • Strongholds provide a big boost of experience for little time investment. Make sure to clear all of them after around level 50.
  • If you're playing an Alt, make sure to use Tempers when you have the materials to do so.
  • Find the most efficient way of leveling your character in detail with our Speed Leveling Guide.

Endgame Transition

Season 1 - Genesis
Rock Splitter Thorns Spiritborn

As you approach level 60 with the Quill Volley Spiritborn, you unlock higher item power gear that represents a massive jump in character power. This is a good time to refresh your setup with new tempers and imprints.

After reaching level 60 and finishing the second Capstone Dungeon, Paragon Levels and The Pit unlock. Complete Tier 10 to enter Torment 1, where Diablo IV's Endgame begins.

At this point, your setup should look roughly like this before you dive into min/maxing with Aspects, Uniques, Mythics and more. With better gear, more levels and Glyphs, you can push further and eventually unlock higher difficulties for increased rewards.

This step marks the end of the leveling guide. Below is the Paragon setup to get you started in Torment difficulty but ideally you should now transition towards the endgame version of this build or choose another of your liking.
