Shield Charge Paladin Endgame Build Guide for Diablo IV Season 12 - Slaughter

FAQ

Welcome to the Shield Charge Paladin Endgame Guide! This is a build based on Thorns damage and Juggernaut synergies. The main skill Shield Charge allows continuous channeling of this movement skill at increasingly higher Faith cost to transform your character into a moving bastion that evaporates packs on impact.

The Paladin kit offers great Thorns bonuses from the get-go such as Clash, Defiance Aura and Thorns and Thistles to beef up your damage. Instead of relying on a big weapon, this build focuses on these synergies and scales your output with additional buffs from there.

The main damage in this build comes from the Retribution mechanic, a small Thorns-based AoE explosion that triggers when you block. Both passive blocks and skill upgrades like Relentless Charge can trigger this effect, making you even more effective in large density.

In addition, you are extremely tanky thanks to extra damage reduction sources like Resolve built into the Juggernaut kit. If you just want to hold down a button, charge through packs and watch the fireworks, you've come to the right place. Let's take a look!

Note that information outside of Build Variants is described from the perspective of the Mythic variant.

Season 1 - Genesis
Shield Charge Paladin

The Season 12 theme brings Killstreaks and Bloodied Items to Diablo 4. Slay enemies in succession to begin a streak that grants increasingly greater benefits based on which affixes you roll on your gear in addition to seasonal reputation and experience. Tiers are divided as follows: Killstreak (0-99) - Carnage (100-249) - Devastation (250-499) - Bloodbath (500-999) - Massacre (1000-9000) - Fresh Meat! (9001+). For most instanced content types, you can typically expect to reach up to the 4th tier (Bloodbath). Additionally, you can find Bloodied Sigils for Nightmare Dungeons, Infernal Hordes and Lair Bosses that offer greater challenges and rewards (introducing "pseudo Torment 5").

Bloodied Items

Bloodied affixes are bonus affixes that can randomly roll on gear and come in three categories: Rampage (armor), Feast (weapons), Hunger (jewelry). The first two offer minor combat effects while the latter boosts specific loot drops, which doesn't impact your build. Recommended affixes for this build are:

  • Rampage: % Strength, but in the early game stats like Crit, Resource and Cooldown are useful to reach caps
  • Feast: Every X Kills, gain Berserking
  • Hunger: Largely irrelevant, but I suggest increased chance for Hunger Items to find more amulets

There is more to discover including the new seasonal Slaughterhouses and how to transform into the Butcher himself. Learn more details about the season theme in our full Season Guide.

技能与玩法

Season 1 - Genesis
Shield Charge Paladin
Gameplay Notes
  • Shield Charge is your main ability. It doesn't deal any damage by itself, but instead is used to trigger Retribution by charging through enemies. Aim to reach near 100% chance to trigger permanently, which quickly caps out once you start channeling. The resource cost increases with every second spend channeling, so it's best to hold it for a few seconds a time.
  • Clash gives a massive Thorns buff and Retribution chance when used every few seconds.
  • Rally fuels resources and cooldowns at the same time. Use it as often as possible to spam all your other skills.
  • Fanaticism Aura adds Weaken and buffs damage, ramping up with repeated attacks.
  • Defiance Aura adds a massive Thorns buff permanently and can be activated for Unstoppable when needed.
  • Fortress provides brief Immunity and a burst of additional damage. It is primarily reserved for Bosses and tough elites.
  • Note that the Starter variants include Consecration and Rally for extra resources until you solve it with Lucky Hits, Parry and Resource Cost Reduction later.
Rotation Breakdown

Skill Rotation

  • Activate Clash and Rally at least once every 6 seconds to keep up their buffs and generate Resolve with Valiance.
  • Hold down Shield Charge for a few seconds at a time to deal damage.
  • On big enemies and bosses, set up your Fortress and repeatedly turn to charge through them to trigger more Retribution explosions.
  • Activate Fanaticism Aura, Defiance Aura and Rally as often as possible.
  • (Starter setup only) Use your Basic Skill or Rally (when healthy enough) to recover resources, then heal with Consecration.

Paladin Oath

As a Juggernaut, you build and spend Resolve to gain a massive damage buff and extra defense, embodying the fantasy of the immovable object.

Season 1 - Genesis
Shield Charge Paladin

This section is designed to guide your Shield Charge Paladin from a fresh level 60 into the very late endgame using the three variants Starter, Ancestral and Mythic. At the final step, you should be fully decked out with a great all-rounder build. From there, follow the other min/max variants if you want to optimize around certain activities such as Push (Tower/Pit), Speedfarm and more.

If you are fresh in Torment 1 coming from a leveling guide, this is where you begin. Since only some Aspects can be guaranteed from Dungeon unlocks for the Codex of Power, focus on acquiring the additional aspects via gambling with Murmuring Obols or Pale Marks in the Mercenary Den.

Gear & Skills

Gear Setup
Skill Tree
  • Early on in your progression, focus on stacking Maximum Life to survive. As you unlock higher power gear and Paragon points, you naturally scale your character into the higher difficulties and can start replacing some of these rolls with offensive stats or uniques.
  • Gamble Shields to acquire Herald of Zakarum as early as possible.
  • If you happen to get a Razorplate, it's a great item to use until later.
  • In the beginning, you have to be more mindful about your resources. Ideally, spam Rally whenever you can afford the life cost, otherwise use your Basic Skill as needed. Cem + Lum also allows you to interrupt your charging with Evade for a resource boost.
  • Verdant Restoration is a massive recovery tool for this build as every Thorns tick can trigger it.
  • While the class-specific aspects are usually stronger, you can also use other generic bonuses like Elemental Fate, Inner Calm and more until you get them.
  • Fortify is an important source of damage, so include one source of it (Hale's Salve) to benefit from passives like The Best Offense.
  • At this stage, it's difficult to hit 100% Block Chance, but Bulwark's, En Garde tempers and some Paragon nodes make it possible. If you feel too squishy, you can invest more into Block earlier (e.g. equip Herald of Zakarum, put the aspect on the amulet, more tempers, rush the Paragon nodes).
  • Once you have completed the basic setup and don't struggle for resources anymore, switch to the Ancestral variant.

Season 1 - Genesis
Shield Charge Paladin

This section describes how to optimize your Shield Charge Paladin with the right Item Affixes, Runes and Mercenary choices.

To enable the Shield Charge Paladin to perform optimally, hunt for these stats on your gear with good rolls and aim to Temper ⚒️ & Masterwork Crit them accordingly. Keep in mind that certain stats, such as Extra Size Tempers, Attack Speed, Critical Strike Chance and more, have caps that may affect your priorities according to the items and Paragon points available at that moment.

Recommended Endgame Stat Thresholds
100% Block Chance
100% Crit Chance
2,000+ Strength
Recommended Endgame Stat Thresholds 2
8,000+ Life
45%+ Cooldown Reduction
Enough resources for near permanent channeling

Recommended Consumables: Soothing Spices, Scents of the Desert Afternoon, Spiral Morning & Elixir of Iron Barbs II.

Stat Priorities

Note that skill ranks to Shield Charge does not increase Retribution damage and Movement Speed only benefits you when not using the skill.

Guide Notes

Take a look into this section for a deeper dive on frequently asked questions, common mistakes and the underlying mechanics of how the Shield Charge Paladin works.

Frequently Asked Questions

The build works really well when you decimate everything in seconds, but may get overwhelmed if fights are long against high level monsters. There are several adjustments you can make when you have trouble with more difficult content:

  • Make sure you reach permanent 100% Block Chance to avoid massive damage spikes.
  • Use defensive consumables (Reddamine Buzz, Soothing Spices, Elixir of Fortitude II).
  • Roll Maximum Life instead of offensive stats on as many pieces as possible.
  • Kite enemies when they become Unstoppable.
  • Replace an offensive rune with Mot, Que or Xal.

Mechanics

  • Juggernaut only consumes stacks and applies a fresh buff after the previous one has expired.
  • The Minimum Resolve still counts towards consumption but cannot be removed (you get permanent 20% damage reduction).
  • Juggernaut's Covenant directly increases Juggernaut Oath tooltip additively (x1.625 total).
