Shield of Retribution Paladin Endgame Build Guide for Diablo IV Season 12 - Slaughter
Welcome to the Shield of Retribution Paladin Endgame Guide! This is a build based on Thorns damage and Juggernaut synergies. The main attack Blessed Shield throws slow-moving disks of destruction into packs while melting bosses with ease for a balanced midrange playstyle.
The Paladin kit offers great Thorns bonuses from the get-go such as Clash and Defiance Aura to beef up your damage. Instead of relying on a big weapon, this build focuses on these synergies and scales your output with additional buffs from there.
While Blessed Shield is typically a Judicator skill, the Shield of Retribution upgrade converts it to Juggernaut instead. As such, the build focuses on building and consuming Resolve and benefits from better survivability.
Eventually, this build aims to spam your main ability non-stop while weaving in all your support skills for extra damage from Ward of the White Dove. That makes the Shield of Retribution Paladin a superb allrounder which works from start to finish and has a smooth progression curve. Let's get started!
Note that information outside of Build Variants is described from the perspective of the Mythic variant.
The Season 12 theme brings Killstreaks and Bloodied Items to Diablo 4. Slay enemies in succession to begin a streak that grants increasingly greater benefits based on which affixes you roll on your gear in addition to seasonal reputation and experience. Tiers are divided as follows: Killstreak (0-99) - Carnage (100-249) - Devastation (250-499) - Bloodbath (500-999) - Massacre (1000-9000) - Fresh Meat! (9001+). For most instanced content types, you can typically expect to reach up to the 4th tier (Bloodbath). Additionally, you can find Bloodied Sigils for Nightmare Dungeons, Infernal Hordes and Lair Bosses that offer greater challenges and rewards (introducing "pseudo Torment 5").
Bloodied affixes are bonus affixes that can randomly roll on gear and come in three categories: Rampage (armor), Feast (weapons), Hunger (jewelry). The first two offer minor combat effects while the latter boosts specific loot drops, which doesn't impact your build. Recommended affixes for this build are:
- Rampage: % Strength, but in the early game stats like Crit, Attack Speed, Movement Speed and Cooldown are useful to reach caps
- Feast: Every X Kills, gain Berserking
- Hunger: Largely irrelevant, but I suggest increased chance for Hunger Items to find more amulets
There is more to discover including the new seasonal Slaughterhouses and how to transform into the Butcher himself. Learn more details about the season theme in our full Season Guide.
- Blessed Shield - Shield of Retribution is your main ability. Instead of throwing a bouncing shield, it fires a slow-moving disk that pulses your Thorns damage six times. These hits can overlap and benefit from larger hitboxes and locking down targets in place, and they don't scale with skill ranks.
- Clash gives us a massive Thorns buff when used every few seconds.
- Falling Star is the main mobility tool, used to jump from pack to pack or over obstacles.
- Rally fuels our resources and the Ward of the White Dove bonus buff while drastically increasing our Movement Speed.
- Fanaticism Aura adds Weaken and buffs damage, ramping up with repeated attacks.
- Defiance Aura adds a massive Thorns buff permanently and can be activated for Unstoppable when needed.
- Note that the Starter variants include Consecration for extra healing and resources until we you acquire enough Life on Hit later.
- Activate Clash at least once every 6 seconds.
- Spam Blessed Shield to deal damage. Keep a short to medium distance from enemies to overlap up to six Thorns pulses per throw.
- Activate Fanaticism Aura, Defiance Aura and Rally as often as possible, ideally every 3 casts for Ward of the White Dove.
- Build enough Resolve with Clash and Rally + Valiance to trigger Juggernaut every 5 seconds.
- Use Falling Star for mobility.
As a Juggernaut, we build and spend Resolve to gain a massive damage buff and extra defense, embodying the fantasy of the immovable object.

The build works really well when you decimate everything in seconds, but may get overwhelmed if fights are long against high level monsters.
- Reach permanent 100% Block Chance.
- Use defensive consumables.
- Roll Maximum Life instead of offensive stats on more pieces.
- Kite enemies when they become Unstoppable.
- Replace an offensive rune with Mot, Que or Xal.
- Juggernaut only consumes stacks and applies a fresh buff after the previous one has expired.
- The Minimum Resolve still counts towards consumption but cannot be removed.
- Juggernaut's Covenant directly increases Juggernaut Oath tooltip additively.
