FAQ

Welcome to The Whirlwind Barbarian Guide! Whirlwind, the best and most versatile skill in the game, is a core and iconic playstyle of any ARPG and is commonly and affectionately known as "Spin to Win" - because you always win if you are playing Whirlwind.

No matter what content you plan to engage in, Whirlwind offers one of the most chill and comfy playstyles while still slaughtering all your enemies, be it in speedfarm content, as you see your enemies fall behind you, or even Pit Pushing the highest Pit Tiers. Regardless of what content you want to do, there is always a Whirlwind build for you.

In Season 12, Whirlwind remains a Natural Force of Nature, creating Earthquakes and Dust Devils to knock your enemies off their feet and decimate them with untamable force and destruction. If becoming a human blender sounds like your idea of a good time, then let out your loudest Rallying Cry as we Whirlwind our way through this Endgame Barbarian Guide!

Season 1 - Genesis
Whirlwind Barbarian

The Season 12 theme brings Killstreaks and Bloodied Items to Diablo 4. Slay enemies in succession to begin a streak that grants increasingly greater benefits based on which affixes you roll on your gear in addition to seasonal reputation and experience. Tiers are divided as follows: Killstreak (0-99) - Carnage (100-249) - Devastation (250-499) - Bloodbath (500-999) - Massacre (1000-9000) - Fresh Meat! (9001+). For most instanced content types, you can typically expect to reach up to the 4th tier (Bloodbath). Additionally, you can find Bloodied Sigils for Nightmare Dungeons, Infernal Hordes and Lair Bosses that offer greater challenges and rewards (introducing "pseudo Torment 5").

Bloodied Items

Bloodied affixes are bonus affixes that can randomly roll on gear and come in three categories: Rampage (armor), Feast (weapons), Hunger (jewelry). The first two offer minor combat effects while the latter boosts specific loot drops, which doesn't impact your build. Recommended affixes for this build are:

  • Rampage: % Strength, % Life.
    • Critical Strike Chance to help fill any gear gaps.
  • Feast: Irrelevant, always focus on the other Weapon Stats.
  • Hunger: Up to preference.

There is more to discover including the new seasonal Slaughterhouses and how to transform into the Butcher himself. Learn more details about the season theme in our full Season Guide.

技能与玩法

Season 1 - Genesis
Whirlwind Barbarian
Gameplay Notes
  • Lunging Strike gives a bit of extra mobility, helps with Berserking uptime and additionally procs Belligerence .
  • Whirlwind is our main skill; it generates resource and, thanks to Tec, it also creates Earthquakes when you move.
  • Rallying Cry is mainly used for the Unstoppable effect and to generate Fortify, but it also provides us with a nice Movement Speed buff and some extra Fury generation.
  • War Cry gives us a nice extra source of multiplicative damage and Berserking.
  • Challenging Shout provides us with a massive damage reduction buff and makes sure we are able to survive some of the most difficult challenges in the game.
  • Call of the Ancients provides us with a bit more damage and Movement Speed.
Rotation Breakdown

Skill Rotation

  • Your Ultimate, Call of the Ancients, is used any time it is off cooldown before the existing buff runs out.
  • Use your Shouts as they come off Cooldown. Try to always hit at least 3 enemies with them to maximize the effect of Bold Chieftain's Aspect.
  • Use Lunging Strike as needed to keep up Berserking and Belligerence.
  • Always make sure you are Spinning to ensure you are Winning.

Arsenal System

The Arsenal System allows us to use a specific weapon for every attack skill, with each weapon granting different bonuses. We also have what is called the Technique Slot. With this, we can use any weapon of our choosing to always reap the benefit from, regardless of which weapon we have equipped.

For the purpose of this guide, the Two-Handed Mace is our main weapon choice. This expertise allows us to take advantage of the 2-Handed Mace high base damage, the 15% damage from the expertise, and passives like Wallop and Heavy Handed.

In the Technique Slot, the Polearm Expertise increases our Damage by 15% while we are healthy. It also provides some lucky hit chance, but that does not benefit this build in any meaningful way.

Season 1 - Genesis
Whirlwind Barbarian

This section is designed to guide your Whirlwind Barbarian from a fresh level 60 into the very late endgame using the three variants Starter, Ancestral and Mythic. At the final step, you should be fully decked out with a great all-rounder build. From there, follow the other min/max variants if you want to optimize around certain activities such as Push (Tower/Pit), Speedfarm and more.

If you are fresh in Torment 1 coming from a leveling guide, this is where you begin. Since only some Aspects can be guaranteed from Dungeon unlocks for the Codex of Power, focus on acquiring the additional Aspects via gambling with Murmuring Obols.

  • Note: If arriving here after following the Whirlwind Barbarian Leveling Guide, it's perfectly fine to continue using the Starter variant described in that guide if there are no issues. There is often more than one way to play a build successfully; feel free to choose or even combine ideas from both to customize the experience!
  • During early progression, Armor & Resistances & Life should be prioritized in order to survive. As masterworking levels and Paragon points are unlocked, character power naturally scales into the higher difficulties. As this happens, most of these stats can start being replaced with utility or offensive-oriented ones.
  • As our damage comes from our Tec Earthquakes, we are running multiple Aspects that buff their damage and allow them to give us some damage reduction:
    • Earthquakes - the poster child of Earthquake Aspects; provides 2 massive damage multipliers.
    • Incendiary Fissures - gives our Earthquakes a lot of damage and converts their damage to Fire.
    • Executioner's - scales with our Strength and gives us up to a 100% damage multiplier on a one-handed weapon.
    • Bul-Kathos - an insanely good defensive Aspect; note that it does *not* require Leap in order to have its effect active.
    • Before you get this Aspect, make sure to stagger the use of your Shouts instead of using them all at the same time, as they are your main source of Fury in this variant of the build.
    • Roll Resource Cost Reduction instead of Critical Strike Damage on weapons.
    • Use Cem (or any other trigger) + Lum to recoup some Fury.
    • Swap Dust Devil's for Berserk Fury on your Ring.
    • Roll Fury per Second (can be rolled on Helm, Chest and Boots).

Mechanics

Much of the information in this section has been carefully and thoroughly tested by Icytroll and is extracted directly from the Barbarian Compendium. This should be your main source for the most accurate and up-to-date explanations on all mechanics that pertain to the Barbarian class.

  • Whirlwind can not Overpower.
  • Whirlwind snapshots Attack Speed effects at the start of its channel. Buffs/effects that are procced during a channel do not apply before you stop the current channel and start a new one.
  • Using Whirlwind applies a 25% penalty to your Movement Speed, meaning if you have 150% Movement Speed you'd only have 150%*(1-25%) = 112.5% Movement Speed when using Whirlwind. Being Unhindered while using Whirlwind cancels the 25% penalty meaning you move with full speed.
  • Whirlwind spends 39.4%, 43.32% or 48.15% of the in-game tooltip Fury amount for each attack animation depending on the weapon you're using, with the in-game base Fury cost of Whirlwind being 25 per second. For example:
    • If we have 0% Resource Cost Reduction (RCR), 0% Attack Speed and assigned a 2H Mace for Whirlwind (26 frames for attack animation, you can find breakpoints in the Attack Speed Breakpoints menu below), we will drain: 25*48.15%*(60/26) = 27.8 Fury per second.
    • If we instead have 21% RCR, 30% Attack Speed and assigned a 2H sword to Whirlwind (18 frames for attack animation), we will drain: 25*(1-21%)*43.32%*(60/18) = 31.7 Fury per second.

Attack Speed

These are attack speed breakpoints for weapons usable with Whirlwind. For a more in-depth explanation of how Attack Speed works, please read our Attack Speed Mechanics article.

Season 1 - Genesis
Whirlwind Barbarian

Summary

The Whirlwind Barbarian is a very relaxed build that does well in most content, especially speedfarming. Here's why it's a great build:

  • Extremely relaxed and chill gameplay!
  • High uptime on all Shout buffs: Rallying Cry, War Cry and Challenging Shout.
  • High uptime on our Ultimates: Wrath of the Berserker or Call of the Ancients, depending on the variant.
  • High mobility; Whirlwind is one of the few skills that can be used continuously while moving.
